Treatment Services

Gynecological Wellness Exam

It is important for women to have a regular wellness exam in order to take control of your health. We recommend a yearly breast and pelvic exam from the age of 21. During this exam, you can expect the following:

  • Breast, abdomen and pelvic exam
  • Pap smear to screen for cervical cancer / pre-cancer, at intervals depending on your age
  • Sexually transmitted infection tests, if indicated
  • Discussion of contraception choices, if desired
  • Screening for colon cancer, when indicated
  • Discussion and evaluation of women’s health problems or worries you have. It is helpful to make a list of questions before you arrive.
  • Mammogram appointment to a nearby facility with state-of-the-art equipment, when indicated by your age and family history

Gynecological Problem Evaluation

If you have any gynecologic symptoms that you are concerned about, schedule a problem-oriented visit for an in-depth evaluation and treatment. Examples of symptoms to seek gynecological care for include:

  • Abnormal bleeding or spotting
  • Unusually painful menstrual cramps or pelvic discomfort
  • Unusual discharge
  • Itching, swelling, or pain of the vulva or vagina
  • Urinary tract infection
  • Urinary incontinence

Any problems that do not resolve with medication or minor office procedures and that require major surgery will be referred directly to one of several specialists in Roanoke.   Our nurses will schedule an appointment with the specialist of your choice to ensure that you are seen and evaluated quickly.

This procedure is recommended to evaluate abnormal results on a Pap smear test. It involves the use of a magnifying scope (colposcope) to closely examine the surface of the cervix. A colposcopy will feel very similar to a Pap smear and will take only a few minutes to perform.

LEEP Conization

LEEP (Loop Electrosurgical Excision Procedure) conization is an office procedure to remove pre-cancer cells from the cervix. This is done with local anesthetic with minimal discomfort.

Laboratory Testing

Our on-site lab provides testing for common women’s health issues, including urinalysis, urine pregnancy, cholesterol panel, glucose, and anemia testing.

Adolescent Gynecology

It is normal for adolescents to have concerns about changes associated with puberty. Occasionally, there are gynecologic problems that need to be evaluated, such as a delayed first period, unusually painful menstrual cramps, heavy bleeding, or abnormal vaginal discharge. An appointment will address questions about normal body changes, gynecologic concerns, and education about birth control and prevention of sexually transmitted diseases when indicated.

In-office ultrasound

A radiologic means of evaluating the pelvic anatomy (uterus, tubes, and ovaries)

Endosee in-office diagnostic hysteroscopy

A minor procedure that allows direct visualization of the uterine cavity to assess for any abnormalities

Birth Control / Contraception Counseling

There are numerous choices of birth control available today, including birth control pills / patches / vaginal rings, hormonal injections and implants, IUDs / intrauterine devices, and diaphragms. It is important to know the pros and cons of each option, as well as how your individual health will affect your choice. A counseling appointment will include education and recommendations about the best choices for you.

Preconception Counseling

Planning to start a family can bring up many questions that can be important to have answered before conceiving. Preconception counseling addresses what vitamins to take, special diet concerns, family history of genetic disorders and any testing indicated, sexually transmitted infection testing, and age concerns.

Infertility Evaluation / Treatment

Difficulty conceiving can be emotionally stressful for women and their partners. An evaluation appointment will include a discussion of the possible problem areas – ovaries, tubes, uterus / cervix, and sperm count – and scheduling of tests for the areas indicated. Some problems identified can be treated in our office with fertility medications. Others will require referral to Reproductive Endocrinology / Infertility specialists for treatments such as fertility medication injections, artificial insemination, in vitro fertilization, donor eggs, etc. Our nurses will schedule and expedite this referral for you.

Menopausal Gynecologic Care

There are many physical and hormonal changes noticed by women in the years before and after menopause. During this time, you may have concerns about:

  • Hot flashes and night sweats
  • Changes in menstrual pattern
  • Mood changes
  • Vaginal dryness
  • Difficulty concentrating and sleeping
  • Weight gain
  • Changes in urination
  • Safety of hormone replacement

Examination, discussion, education, and treatment of these pre-menopausal and post-menopausal concerns can help to alleviate these symptoms that can be so difficult.
